Help! I inadvertantly tried to park the hard disk on an AT with an XT diagnostics diskette. Now the hard disk seems to be kaput. Have I lost the data on the hard disk (I haven't tried re-formatting it yet)? Is it really possible to trash the hard disk in this way? This is an official IBM PC/AT and an official IBM diagnostics diskette(v2.07). Thanks, Brad Sherman (bks@alfa.berkeley.edu)

It would seem improbable that just 'parking' a head would damage the rest of a disk. However, a slight, low-level re-alignment of the head position might affect hear-track alignment and thus readability. Try SpinRite.
