[net.ham-radio] Request for advice in choosing 2-meter repeater equipment.

john@wavetek.UUCP (John Moriarity) (05/21/85)

I'm looking for recommendations or caveats regarding the 2-meter
repeater packages currently offered. Our group is looking at the
systems offered by Spectrum and Micro Control Products (MK4, MK4 etc.).
Since we are faced with spending about $3K, we need any comments
you would like to make.

I would consider adapting some used commercial gear in massively greater
preference to either brand mentioned. You can buy used GE, or Motorola
repeaters for $800 and up through places like Gregory Electronics (in
Pennsylvania, I think) or California Radio in Montrose, Colorado, or
another outfit in El Paso, Texas, etc....
While I have not used either brand mentioned, one look at the construction
should be revealing, and our Colorado frequency coordinator gags every time
someone mentions the brand names listed. He has left me with the impression
that all the major interference problems in the state can be traced to those
brands, either transmitter of receiver deficiencies being the primary cause.
I have no first-hand experience with these machines, but I have worked on
GE, Motorola, RCA and Johnson RF gear, and don't believe I'd put anything
less on a mountain.

If he gags on those two, what DOES he recommend? (I have absolutely
no familiarity with repeater equipment, but I am curious).
