[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] problem setting up extended memory

phantom@wor.umd.edu (Scott S. Perry) (08/15/90)

Recently I added another 512k to my motherboard to bring it up
to 1 meg from the original 640k. My problem is, I am unable to set up
this memory as 640k conventional and 384k extended. There is one
jumper to select whether you have 512/640k or whether you have 1 meg.
Then there is the setup program to tell it how you have your memory
set up.

The problem is, as long as the jumper is set for 1 meg mode,
if you configure (with setup) the memory as any other combination than
512k conventional and 512k extended, it says "Memory Unmatched, run
setup." when booting, and in addition it "forces" this memory as 512k
conv. and 512k extended (in other words, it overrides what I set).

In looking at the manual, it doesn't say much, but if I
interpret it correctly, the above is supposed to happen. Also, if I
have the jumper set to 512/640 mode, it doesn't allow me to specify
extended memory (or I get the same message).

What can I do to get 640k conventional and 384k extended (or
basically, more memory available as conventional). New BIOS? Special
driver? DR-DOS 5.0?

E-mail responses preferable.
