[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Need non English OCR & document processing

stanojev@ee.rochester.edu (Bob Stanojevich) (08/22/90)

	Hi,

I am looking for two bizarre software packages. First, one is
a software for optical character recognition (OCR) for non
English alphabet. The alphabet that I am interested is called
Gurmukhi and is same as modern Indian Pujabi alphabet. This alphabet
is essentially derivate of the Sanskrit. The main problem with this
alphabet is that it has characters in a word connected with vowels that
can appear above and/or bellow consonants. Any software that I have
seen so far that can learn the alphabet has implicit assumption that
there are no characters above or bellow and that the characters in
a word are separated. Public domain is preferred but commercial will be fine.

Second I am looking for the document processing package that
can display Gurmukhi alphabet. I have Adobe Type Gurmukhi font
that I can download into the laser. I need a software that can read
Adobe Type font and font metrics display them on the screen and
do the proper kerning within English text document with graphics.
I am not sure which Adobe Type it is. It is just an ASCII file
with Encoding Dictionary, Metrics Dictionary and procedures for
each character.
Can WriteNow on NeXT read any Adobe Type font and use it in a document?
How would you do that?

I would prefer the software to be for one of the following machines IBM-PC
or MAC or NeXT, but reference to any OCR that might work is welcomed.
Please, send all responses directly by e-mail to stanojev@ee.rochester.edu.
I will compile them and post the summary.

Thanx a lot for any information Bob S.
