It seems to me that there are a couple of very important things missing from kermit and all of the other terminal emulators that I have used. They are: o A 43 line mode. o Smooth scrolling. If anyone knows of a terminal emulator that has either of these features, please let me know. Thank you, Todd -- Todd Michael Bezenek Internet: bezenek@plains.nodak.edu Amateur Radio Station KO0N UUCP: uunet!plains!bezenek Bitnet: bezenek@plains NU040889@ndsuvm1 This message is proof that higher education still exists in North Dakota. /* End of text from S55:comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc */ But, But, But, I have used KERMIT in a number of strange screen sizes ^= 80x24! It works FINE! 80x43, 132x24, 132x27, 132x36, 132x44, 80x60, 80x66, 110x54, etc, etc, etc. The trick is to already be in the video mode when you enter KERMIT. It will correctly deduce the screen size from your BIOS areas. Also, KERMIT can use your ANSI driver for support. If you use an ANSI driver like NNANSI, NANSI, or ZANSI, then you can change screen sizes (at least the common screen sizes of 80x24, EGA 80x43, and VGA 80x60) via escape sequences sent to the screen (ANSI code extensions I beleive, and the different drivers might support different codes). Personally, I use NNANSI on my EEGA (up to 800x600) and have no problems using KERMIT in odd screen sizes. The software I use on the remote site is very happy to deal with the large screens too (like PR1ME EMACS, and the PR1ME command line editor). ============================================================================ Kevin J. Telix 3.12 has support for 43- or 50-line screen modes. There's a catch, unfortunately. Version 3.12 has a bug that messes up Telix's character translation table if you do certain screen control sequence combinations. I reported this bug to the author of Telix a few months ago -- and since I'm a registered 3.12 user, he gave me a new version with this bug fixed. But the shareware version 3.12 still has the bug and won't work properly with more than 25 lines on the screen. I don't know when the author plans to release a new shareware version with this fix. I suppose if enough people called or wrote him and said they'd like to use Telix but can't use 3.12 because they need bug-free 43- or 50-line support, it might speed matters up somewhat. -- -- Rich Wales <wales@CS.UCLA.EDU> // UCLA Computer Science Department 3531 Boelter Hall // Los Angeles, CA 90024-1596 // +1 (213) 825-5683 "You must not drink the tea.
