[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] HELP!!! Having Problems Installing MS-DOS 4.01

thermal%solgel.hepnet@CSA1.LBL.GOV (08/29/90)

Hello All,

I'm in the process of installing MS-DOS 4.01, and I am having weird
problems trying to get it installed properly.

First of all let me summarize my reason for wanting 4.01 versus 3.30, and
give you the hardware configuration I'm trying to install it on:

Reason: Would like to (and have a need to) partition my disk to greater
         than 32 mb.

Hardware: Omnitell 386-33 motherboard w/ 4 mb RAM (Phoenix BIOS),
Orchid Pro-Designer II video board with 1 Mb,
           150 mb NEC hardrive (ESDI).

Installation Problems:

a) When I get to the point of copying in the Operating System 2 and 3
diskettes, the system gives me a copy error (another set of diskettes
gave me the same problem). When I reboot the system, I get an error
message from the autoexec.bat file, basically not finding a program
to execute (I think it's APPEND). I haven't given the current boot
configuration any shakedown to see if there are any problem(s), but
I don't get a good feeling from these installation error messages.

b) Supposedly loading in the MS-DOS 4.01 will automatically give me
access to the entire 150 mb of the harddisk on one partition (which
is what I want), but it only gave me 24 mb. Someone else worked on
this, and they were able to partition the disk into two parts, the
first partition (C) having 10 mb, the second partition (D) having
140 mb (I honestly don't know what they did, but they mentioned
something about the NEC having 1222 cylinders, and MS-DOS only
allowing 1024, or something like that - I don't think they know how
to solve this problem correctly - and of course I don't, either).

Any help out there in Usenetia would be most appreciated. You can
e-mail me or call me. Thanks in advance, Jon Noring
