dchun@aludra.usc.edu (Dale Chun) (08/29/90)

Thanks to all that responded to the word processor survey that was
presented here a couple of weeks ago credits listed at the bottom
of this document. For those that missed the survey, votes were
taken satisfying the requirements of:

	o fast typing speed
o spell check, thesauraus, mail merge, etc...
o fast response time on a 80286-10 machine
o Budget of $500 per package.

Multiple/negative votes were also accepted. Summary posted below:

AMIPRO: (2 neg votes, 0 pos votes)

All two of the negative votes casted described the
slowness of AmiPro running on a 80286-10 in the Windows
environment with 640K. Having Windows run in Standard mode
or higher drastically improved the speed of AmiPro.

WORD FOR WINDOWS: (4 neg votes, 8 pos votes)

Similar to that of AmiPro, Word for Windows suffered a
speed problem running in the Windows Environment.

Learning curve was small for most users of Word for
	Windows.

WORD 5.0: (4 neg votes, 5 pos votes)

Difficult to use for some users. Ackward commands.

Speed, layout and ease of use was a plus for some users.

WORD PERFECT 5.1: (4 neg votes, 12 pos votes)

ASCII file handling was poor for those that focused
primary on ASCII file editing. Disliked by programmers.

Ease of use was nice for some users. Integrated help was a
big plus. Printer support was an emphasized feature.

WORDSTAR 5.5/6.0: (1 neg vote, 5 pos votes)

Secretaries tend to dislike this word processor due to the
	command layout.

Fast, nice command layout for some users, mainly
programmers or touch typists. Layout and printer support
	was an emphasized feature.

MULTIMATE II: (1 neg vote, 0 pos votes)

Slow, layout and document handling was poor.

MICROEMACS: (0 neg votes, 1 pos vote)

Good for editing plain ASCII files.

VI: (0 neg votes, 1 pos vote)

Good for editing plan ASCII files.

XYWRITE: (0 neg votes, 1 pos vote)

Fast, good for editing. Strong ruler formatting
	indicators.

SPRINT: (0 neg votes, 1 pos vote)

Low cost. Compatibility with other word processors.
