It was the Maxtor 3000 series I have referred to.  These drives do not
properly arbitrate for the SCSI bus.  It only prevents them from working
peacefully with other SCSI devices on the bus.  Under DOS it usually isn't
a problem, as DOS will only issue one command at a time, but with UNIX
it can be (probably will be) bad news.
I have used other Maxtor drives with no problems.
