[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Can an XT have high-capacity floppy drives?

bmyers@garnet.berkeley.edu (Brian Myers) (09/17/90)

Is it possible to upgrade and XT (compatible or clone) by replacing one of
its 360k floppies with a 1.2 MB 5 1/4 floppy drive? I've heard various
rumors saying that you can't, but no one I talk to seems to know for sure.
Anyone out there know for certain? Reply by email. Thanks.

Seven people answered almost immediately. Sorry I didn't have time
to thank you all individually. The concensus is that an XT as is
cannot handle a high-density floppy drive. You can, however, buy
an inexpensive controller card that actually contains a new bit of
ROM that inserts itself whenever the drive is used, and then
you *can* run 1.2 MB drives. Price estimates ranged from $35 to
$50 for the controller card.

Thanks again for the help, everyone.
