BACKSCATTER Newsletter
Just received an issue of BACKSCATTER, a sporadic
newsletter "designed to inform the shortwave community
about developments in the field of Over-the-Horizon
(OTH) Radar." Bob Horvitz, chairman of ANARC's Over-
the-Horizon Radar Committee, edits BACKSCATTER, which
is about 4 pages long.
According to the issue I have, one may receive the next
issue of BACKSCATTER when published by sending a long,
self-addressed US-stamped envelope and 50 cents (for a
single issue.) The 50 cents may be in the form of mint
US postage stamps. Requests for delivery to points
outside the US should not include SASEs or foreign
stamps, but 4 IRCs for airmail delivery instead.
Address inquiries to:
Association of North American Radio Clubs'
Over-the-Horizon Radar Committee

The June 1985 issue contains these articles, as quoted
from the 'News in Brief' overview:
- "Woodpecker Project" gathering data on Woodpecker
band use and interference to shortwave broadcasts;
hundreds of volunteers needed for world-wide moni-
toring effort in October.
- First 60 degree sector of US system in Maine to
begin test transmissions this summer or fall.
- England and Japan may get OTH radars.
- Debate over OTH procurement within Pentagon shar-
pens as DARPA chief says, "we cannot afford to use
contemporary technology to build a US air
defense... space systems are the only way..."
- More detail on Australia's "Project Jindalee":
contrary to earlier reports, it's not a pulser.
- OTH and the "Star Wars" connection.
