[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] DRDOS - dir prots, games, escaping to, pricing

braun@dri.com (Karl T. Braun (kral)) (09/20/90)

I forwarded some postings from this newsgroup concerning DRDOS to our
Tech Support people on Compuserve. Here are some responses. (Unfortunately,
the base message was lost in all of the forwarding).

--------

1. You can indeed write-protect subdirectories. You can also protect
the directory from even being accessed; there would be NO WAY for a
user to tell that the directory even existed, except for a direct
examination of the FAT with something like PCTOOLS. Booting up under
another operating system does not help, the directory is still
    protected.
2. DR DOS 5.0 is compatible with a wide range of game software. If it
is important to you, I can supply you with a partial list. One of my
most dedicated beta testers was the 15-year old son of one of our
engineers. He rejected all previous versions of DR DOS because they
wouldn't run his games; DR DOS 5.0 passed even his inspection.
3. Yes, you can "pop to DOS" from within programs designed to do that
    under other DOS operating systems.
4. DR DOS 5.0 is available through retail distribution; both Ingram-Micro D
and Merisel carry it. Therefore, you can have your local dealer order
it for you. I don't know what the average "street price" is at this
time. Selected educational institutions are being contacted at this
point for evaluations of DR DOS; based on input, we will evaluate the
possibility of educational discounts for DR DOS. Finally, if your college
bookstore contracts with the Douglas Stewart Company for their inventory,
have them contact Douglas Stewart about DR DOS pricing.
Best regards,

Sue

I was one of those requesting information on DR DOS 5.0. Your answers
were very helpful. Just one more question and then I'll stop. Regarding
protection of subdirectories in DR DOS 5.0, is it limited to hidden
and write protect, or can one set up read-only, execute-only, and
specific user permission? Thanks. DR DOS 5.0 sounds worth trying.
