Hello, does anyone out there have any idea if it is possible to dial-up directly from a pc to an IBM sys/34 mini, just using a modem on the pc end? Does sys/34 support this? If possible, how would you do it? How much might it cost? thanks a lot in advance, S. Kueny

One is to install a 5250 emulation board in the PC. Then, on the S/34 side you define this as a remote terminal controller with a single terminal and/maybe a printer (some emulation board/software allow you to define the printer hooked into you LPT port as another device on the controller). Many vendors make this. Some of the biggies includes, IBM, Emerald, DCA, and Black Box. The second way is to install a software on the S/34 called PC Support. This allow you to do more than just terminal emulation. File transfer is also available. If you don't need anything fancy, you can get away with Async Manager. Then you would need to have any communication software that have IBM 3150 support (most comm have VT100). The cost of the 5250 boards range from $600 and up. The price for PC Support have to be check with your IBM SE. They change this quarterly.
