[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Setup of MS Works

sjo@cci632.UUCP (Steve Owens) (09/26/90)

I've got a question for all you DOS hackers out there:

Is there some reason why I have to keep all my MS Works files in a
single directory?

The reason I ask is that I tried to split the files into several
directories for data, executables, etc. I then set up the PATH and APPEND
environment variables to access the files the way I thought was correct.
Works operated fine until it came time to print out my document. It then
decided that it could not find my printer config files, so that my printer
simply appeared to be a tty device (according to the printer setup menu.)
The documentation is typical MSDOS, in other works: Too much fluff, not
enough biscuit.

How does Works handle the PATH and APPEND environment variables?
Does Works even *use* the MSDOS environment, or does it simply look in the
present directory for these files?

The only thing I haven't tried is to load everything into my Works
directory, then change both my PATH and APPEND variables to access this
directory. While I'd like to believe this would work, I'm having my doubts.
Can anyone explain this problem?

BTW, I'm running Works 2.0 with MSDOS 4.01. Thanx.
