[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] How to "test" a diskette ???

I am looking for a way to test the reliability of diskettes.
is there some program out there, or a methodology to use for
testing them. 
I have an idea to write to every available byte on a disk,
then erase the disk, then write, then erase, ... keeping count
of how many writes were successfully completed. I can use 
these numbers to compare name brand diskettes against 
el cheapos. 
Is this a valid method of testing, or just a way to really
damage my read/write heads with worthless overuse ???
I wanted to test the fake 1.44 megs against the real 1.44's.
