	  YAESU	FRG9600	VHF/UHF	SCANNING RECEIVER:
		    PRELIMINARY	COMMENTS

A friend of a friend (of a friend) tried the new Yaesu 60 -
905 MHz	scanning receiver, with	these comments:

   - Apparently	good sensitivity on all ranges, but noti-
ceable intermod in	the 150	- 160 MHz range.

   - Only 10 of	the 100	channels can be	scanned.

   - There is no way to	lock out a channel from the	scan
     list.

   - The tuning	knob makes a "clicking"	sound as it is rota-
ted, and	it takes several turns	to tune	even a small
     band segment.

   - Relatively	slow scan and search rates.

   - Scanning algorithm	pauses on an active channel for at
most 7 seconds, then resumes scanning abruptly, causing
     interrupted transmissions.

   - Scanning fails to stop sometimes, even on	strong	sig-
     nals.

The reviewer assessed the FRG9600 "a failure as	a scanner",
although it is ok as an	SWL receiver for higher	frequencies.
