[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] *** Background File Transfers ***

cs162fbt@sdcc7.ucsd.edu (Gary) (10/15/90)

Does anyone have or know of a public domain program that does
downloading in the background? There is one PD called invisible
link, but you need to pay $35 to get the background downloading
feature.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Gary

Ps: Protocols I am looking for are Xmodem and/or kermit.

Try BGFT for background file transfers. It's not public domain
(fully supported shareware, with a $29.50 registration fee), but
the background transfers work just fine in the unregistered version
so you can try it out to see if it's what you want.

BGFT has several unique features, one of which is the use of the
floppy drive as a 'file buffer'. This results in very reliable
background transfers (DOS is not used by BGFT during transfers).
Background transfers are done by a small TSR, approximately 33 KB
in size, while a larger transient program provides a friendly user
interface and terminal emulators, dialing directory, etc. Xmodem
and Ymodem-Batch protocols are supported as is background dialing.

Give it a try.

The latest version of BGFT is 2.1, released in May, 1990, and
should be found on local BBS's in file BGFTU210.ZIP. It can also be
downloaded directly from a dedicated support BBS at 416-283-7157
(Toronto, Canada).

I have no disclaimer for this posting - I'm one of the authors, and
obviously biased towards BGFT!
