[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] mushed my drive...

daver@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu (10/18/90)

As I was switching the positions of my floppy drive and hard drive,
I clunked it into the wall of the case on the way. "gee dave, good
thing you parked the heads." I thought happily.
BUT...
I didn't, or hadn't, or they undid themselves, but I it was probably "I didn't"
In any case, many files seem to be there. In fact, all the directories
exist and show themselves with no problems. Some files, however, don't
like being called up. (I found this out as I started to finish backing
up all those files I'd started but never finished) and I get data error
on drive c messages after it hums and stutters for a good 15 seconds.
I backed up all the files I could (it's only a 20 meg beast) and tried
to format it. It gets to track 500 or so and takes 40 seconds to
get through head 0. Ultimatly, it says "format error" and stops.
HELP HELP HELP...

This is a seagate st225 and I'm on a 12mhz xt clone with msdos 3.2.
I've backed up everything important, so data recovery is not important,
but I'd like to be able to use my drive like normal. Is there some kind
of bulkerase command I can use to fix all the scars there might be?
If not, is there a way I can make it into a crippled 10meg drive or something?
I've wanted to upgrade drives, but not so soon...
Thanks for any help
