Since I received so many responses about MEI disks, I thought it only fair to follow up with what I learned from them. Based on the comments I received, MEI seems to have provided a good product in the past. Almost everyone (and I received about 20 responses) was satisfied with the disks and quoted much lower failure rates than I experienced. There were a few responses that indicated failure rates as high as 50% with MEI disks. Most of these responses had pur- chased the disks recently as opposed to the favorable replies which mentioned purchasing disks as long as 2 years ago. Based on the generally positive comments, I approached MEI and was told that their principle supplier had just relocated the plant to China. There apparently have been some quality control problems, but they are being addressed. MEI was very positive about honoring the money back or replacement guarantee in their ads. Based on this I feel MEI is probably concerned about product quality and will rectify the situation as soon as they can. In the mean time I would use their disks for non-critical backups and other uses. One thing that surprised me was the number of respondents who mentioned they had "high" failure rates with name brand disks. As I said in my first posting, in 7-8 years of computing I only remember ONE bad disk out of thousands I have purchased. For 5.25" I generally use Sony, 3M or Platinum and for 3.5" DD I use Sony.
