I have an 8 bit XT clone right now. I like to get a paperwhite VGA for it. In a few months, I'm going to upgrade to a 386sx. If I get the VGA card and monitor for my XT now, can I still use the same monitor and card later for the 386sx? I'm pretty sure I can use the same monitor, but what about the card? I understand that the 386sx uses 16 bit VGA cards. Are there VGA cards that are interchangeable between 8 and 16 bit computers i.e XT and AT? -- Alex Lai ^^^^^^ (((((( In Stereo )))))) Communication Systems Management / O O \ Where Available Ohio University, Athens, Ohio ( \____/ ) alai@oucsace.cs.ohiou.edu \______/ ad094@cleveland.freenet.edu

If I get the VGA card and monitor for my XT now, >can I still use the same monitor and card later for the 386sx? There are several 8 bit VGA cards on the market. These are not to be confused with 16 bit cards that can operate in 8 bit mode. Paradise makes one such card. Such a card will work in both an XT and AT bus. As for the monitor, the VGA card, not the PC, is the determing factor. So any monitor you get will work as long as you keep the same VGA card. On the other hand, most 16 bit cards are also selectable to run in 8 bit mode only, meaning you could buy this type of 16 bit card, and run in 8 bit mode until you get a 386 system. On a related note: I just purchases an Expert TopVGA 2300. The vendor claims it is a Paradise OEM card. This appears to be true as it has the WD chip on board, Paradise executables and drivers, and Autosense software. My problem is the utility disks are missing the config.dat file the install program requires for installation and set-up. Anyone use this card and have a similar problem? The card is a 16 bit VGA, etc. with 256K on board expandable to 512K that allows 1024 X 768 resolution. Anyone have a copy of the config.dat file or know how I can fake one? Yes, the dealer is working on the problem. Thanks. -- "For every word, there is a song upon which inspiration lies ...". Ed Tankus. {uunet, yale}!hsi!tankus -- OR -- tankus@hsi.com
