[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Disk read problem & system-to-system disk drive compatibility

riacmt@ubvmsa.cc.buffalo.edu (Carol Miller-Tutzauer) (11/03/90)

I'm hoping someone on this net can help me. My problem is as
follows:

I have several diskettes that contain wordperfect documents that were
created and saved at another university (Penn St) on an IBM PS/2 model 55. The
diskettes (there are 4 or so) are high density. I am unable to read the disks
on my high density drive on my Zenith 286 machine. According to the person
who gave me these diskettes, he was unable to read them on PS/2 model 35's
there at Penn State but WAS able to read them on the model 55 in his office
(he is the one who created the docs). Through a series of questions, it
appears that the PS/2 model 35 read problems are due to the fact that those
machines had LOW density drives and obviously cannot read HD disks. But
why can't MY high density drive not read the documents saved to the
high density diskettes using the PS/2 model 55?

Time is of the essence; these documents are important. All back-up copies
were created on the same machine and so I can't read any of them. When I
tried to display the directory using the DOS DIR command, I got the old
"abort, retry, fail" message. From within wordperfect, I got "Disk error
23...Retry or Cancel?" message. I tried to do a disk test with Norton
utilities and got a message saying something like "cannot read directory."
What's going on and what can I do?

Please respond by e-mail as I don't get on this list often.
