[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] System Display Type Mismatch -- WHAT???

bolton@cg-atla.UUCP (Lee Bolton) (11/07/90)

	I've got a 386/16, CGA, 4M EMS
I've installed win3 straight from the floppies onto a raw dos
system booted from the dos diskettes. NOTHING in the way,
	NOTHING non-standard. no autoexec.bat, no config.sys, nada.
	And, I renamed win.ini.
Real & standard mode run fine, in enhanced mode I get

			System Display Type Mismatch

when trying to shell out to dos, or any non-windows app.
A further symptom is that progman reports memory correctly in real
and standard modes, but is off by some random amount in enhanced mode.
The only thing I can possibly think of, is that I've got
shadow ram enabled on the MB. But, I tried setting himem to leave
the shadow area alone, and it don't help. Can you?
BTW, My usual environment is full of hacks, share-ware, 3rd party
drivers, and unusual appurtenances. Never even a cough.
I also run SV/386 without a hitch. it's a slug, but it goes.
It's desperation time here campers! gimme a clue. please.
