Many thanks to dlg6627@uxa... who sent me a new HIMEM.SYS. But NOW... Windows jumps back to the C:\> prompt after displaying its opening screen. Do I just need to re-install it? Perhaps WIN.INI needs to be changed?? I've been using it in real mode for a couple months now. Any clues anyone? Thanks again... Mark C. Lowe - KB5III

HIMEM.SYS comes with Windows 3.0. This implements XMS 2.0 standard which all other versions of HIMEM.SYS did not implement. You need to use the one that comes with Windows 3.0. Anything else won't work. Actually I lied ..... QEMM-386 5.1 will work too. Regards, ## Life is fast enough as it is ........ Peter Lim. ## .... Can you post the relevant part sof your AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS? I
haven't been able to use Win3 in enhanced mode with QEMM 5.1 at all.

Look in the special pamphlet that came with QEMM 5.1 which is entirely devoted to the topic of running windows with it installed. Pretty simple, actually. Delete EVERYTHING from your config.sys and try this: FILES=30 BUFFERS=30 DEVICE=QEMM.SYS RAM NOSORT The NOSORT parameter is not actually required, though one poster mentioned that on HIS system, it WAS required. Once you have it working, add things back to CONFIG.SYS one at a time until it stops working, at which point you will identify the culprit. Do NOT use HIMEM.SYS or EMM386.SYS !! If you use SMARTDRV.SYS, please read the relevant portion of the QEMM pamphlet. -- ___Mark S. Change that last line to read: DEVICE=QEMM386.SYS RAM NOSORT They had to rename QEMM.SYS because MS Windows was explicitly looking for it and refusing to install if you were using QEMM.
