We have a department here with 3 PC compatibles connected via a serial data switch to a single Laserwriter Plus (old ROMS). They use word 5.0b and works to print to it. The problem is that after printing four pages the Laserwriter hangs as well as the PC. Apple have told me that this is related to handshaking i.e. the old Laserwriters only support XON/XOFF whereas the Laserwriter II's support DTR as well. They recommend using a spooling program that talks XON/XOFF or a buffer box which does the correct protocol conversion. The thing I don't understand is that Microsoft support claim that Word 5 talks XON/XOFF. Does the problem lie with DOS and the mode command? I can't replace the data-switch due to funds and I dont have an appropriate spooling program. Assuming this is the correct approach, does anyone know where I can get a PD or commericial spooler to fix the problem. Is the Laserwriter Plus a waste of time for this environment. Will WordPerfect behave itself better? Please email me direct Tony Locke Micro Support Sydney Uni.
