I would recommend Turbo Debugger (not PD but cheap) and a public domain
hex editor (I have one called hexed but there are others) for those quick
fixes.
There is a PD program called fsd (full-screen debug) - I tried it for a while
but have never put the necessary effort into learning to use it properly.
Having learned to use DEBUG I can get by with it. Despite it's
defficiencies DEBUG is very widely available and if you don't have anything
else to hand .............
I guess what I'm saying is that I have not found anything to replace DEBUG
that is free, reliable and widely available - but other may have??
