[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] help with modem

passman@Alliant.COM (Shirley Passman) (11/16/90)

I just upgraded my Leading Edge 386sx from a seagate 251-1 to a
quantum 105 meg SCSI drive using a Future Domain controller. When I
did I ran into a conflict with the VGA card that Future Domain solved
by having me change the 16 bit VGA card to an 8 bit slot. The problem
with that was the Everex modem 1200 baud was in that and I changed it
to the 16 bit slot. Last night I tried to use the modem to get on
compuserve and everytime I tried, it would dial out, I'd get a connect
signal and then it would immediately go to "NO CARRIER".

Before I start taking everything apart again (and throwing it across the
room) does anyone know if trying to run the 8 bit modem in a 16 bit slot
could cause this kind of problem. Is there a solution other than buying
a different modem or VGA card. (I haven't been able to confirm if there
is a way to force the card VGA card to run in 8 bit mode in a 16 bit slot,
or even if this would solve the problem with the initial conflict.

Any help would be VASTLY appreciated!
