[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] pc-nfs-problems with MS-DOS 3.30, MS-WORD 5.0

bv@NIXCTC.DE (Burkhard Viehoff) (11/12/90)

We have several PCs linked via PCNFS to a UNIX-Box that
helps them besides others as file-server and as printer-spooler.

As network-card we use the WD 8003 EB board.
The UNIX-box is a Pyramid/Targon 35 running ATT System V 3.2 (TOS 3.3.07)

Two main-problems occur with pc-nfs under MS-DOS 3.30:

1. MS-LINK 3.65 claims: "Can't find object file"
				  "Can't create run file"
whereas read and write access with 'copy' works correctly.

2. MS-WORD 5.0 (German version):
"Fehler beim Schreiben in dem Laufwerk oder Verzeichnis gefunden"
od in good English: "Error when writing to drive or to directory"

The reason for those problems are NOT insufficient permissions.
The reason seems to be an incompatibility of the PC-NFS-Driver with
MS-DOS 3.30.
Sun Microsystems (Germany) suggests to use MS-DOS 3.20.
But this doesn't seem to be a solution for the future.

We heard from the net, that it is possible to use
PCNFS in combination with Windows 3.0.
We would like to get information, experiences about this
combination.

Thank your very much in advance
for your help and interest !

        Best regards
                         Burkhard Viehoff

We had this type of problem, but it stems from our setting the variable MSWNET
to our default network drive "J". Once the drive has been properly mounted,
MS Word works fine.

We currently are using PC-NFS 3.01 in connection with MS Windows 3.0 on
several Zenith 386-SX's. It appears to be working fine with a slight problem
with how Windows recognizes the virtual drives. Sharing drives and printers
is no problem. As for the virtual drive problem, we fixed that by adding a
small batch file to "SUBST" all of the drives that we do not use to the
hard drive "C". Then, no matter what drive we pick, it is defined. Other
than that we have had no real problems.

One caution: It is impossible to run "telnet" in a small window. it will crash
windows. However, it is perfectly fine to run it full screen from windows.

The problem I used to have with the MS-DOS 3.X are from the size of
disks. DOS 3.X only handle up to 32M, and most NFS file systems are in
the range of several hundred megas. What we did than is simple -
upgrade ro MS-DOS 4.01.

Hope this message is relevent.
