[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Isolated MS Mouse problems

ken@gtenmc.UUCP (Ken Swapp) (11/21/90)

Hi Netters!

I am having a problem with my Microsoft Bus Mouse. The machine
it misbehaves on is an XT clone with 640k. I have tested the board
and mouse on my AST 386 with 2 meg. (at work) and they both behave as
expected.

The problem arises when I try to use the mouse with Windows 3.0,
and the Paintbrush program that come with it. When one of these programs
first starts to load, the mouse arrow can be moved around the screen.
As more of the program loads into memory, the mouse becomes less and less
responsive, jerking around the screen as it catches up to my hand movements.
The response becomes worse, and as the package is fully loaded into memory,
the mouse arrow refuses to respond at all. The mouse behaves on some
smaller programs, (like a Type program, and in SIMTELs STARVIEW program).

I called technical support for my (old) computer, and they said
Windows 3.0 wouldn't run on an XT. I told them they were wrong, and that
the manual said otherwise (it runs fine except for the mouse). They said
it must be the software. Microsoft said it must be the computer. A friend
who works for a third-party developer for Microsoft said that was odd since
I was using the Bus Interface version with its own board. I was wondering
if I just need more memory. This doesn't seem likely, but the behavior of
the mouse as the programs load seems to point to that possible solution.

Any solutions out there? I plan to purchase a 386 ASAP, but would
still like to keep this beast if it doesn't have hardware problems. If
this fails I suppose I will have to actually PAY someone ... horrors.

     Thanks for any help,
     Ken Swapp

Technical support is correct. Trying to run Windows 3.0 on an XT is like
trying to tow a 20 foot trailer loaded with cement with a 250CC
motorcycle. You do not get very far or go very fast. You are asking for
a miracle if you want to run Windows 3.0 on an XT machine. The fact that
Windows 3.0 can run on 286 machines is itself a miracle. You only get
one miracle in this business.
