It seems that the ATI VGA Wonder+ (the one that supports 70Hz refresh rates) doesn't handle text output in 640x400, 640x480, and 800x600 (all these x256) modes. You may notice this if you run, e.g., vpic or if you simply put the card in a hires mode from debug. The tech support person at ATI said that this is all a result of adding the 70Hz support--I presume she meant that they ran out of room--and is sending me different ROMs that do text but don't do 70Hz. Anyone else with this board might want to look into a similar deal... What I don't quite understand is the explanation that the ATI tech person gave. She said that if you used 70Hz refresh you would be using 1024x768 non-interlaced and therefore wouldn't need to run any of the other modes. Beyond the fact that 1024x768 isn't possible in 256 colors (a pretty good reason for running 800x600) I thought 70Hz refresh was for lower resolution modes anyway and not directly related to non-interlaced 1024x768 operation. Perhaps she just meant that a monitor capable of 1024x768 non-interlaced could also handle 640x480 at 70Hz rather than 60Hz? Does anyone have the whole list of choices from ATI? How about hardware documentation for the card? Dan Lanciani ddl@harvard.*
