a while ago i asked about a free version of vi for msdos. this is what i found. a reasonable p.d. version of vi is stevie. i found it at 16.1.0.2. is anyone interested in a real pd versiuon of ex/vi? is it likely that i would make much money with shareware if i wrote one? (if i write one, i am pretty sure it will not run very fast on my slow 286 machine, so i will want to get a faster one, besides, i want money). gwoho liu

I'm sure there are people who are interested in vi for DOS, and
you might even be lucky enough to get a few registrations for it. But
don't bother writing a shareware program unless you're going to benefit
enough from it to justify the time you spent writing it, because you're
very unlikely to get many registrations.
BTW, you don't need a terribly fast machine for a well-written vi unless
a) you'll be doing a lot of wildcarded searches on large files
or
b) you're planning to use a hard disk to handle large files or the
undo command (anyway, this requires a fast hard disk rather than a
fast CPU).

There are already several vi clones for MSDOS on the shareware market. comp.sys.ibm.pc.binaries just posted on of them. -- ************************************************************* ** Kerry Amburgy amburgy@en.ecn.purdue.edu ** ** Captain Kalex USS Vanguard ** *************************************************************
