[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Buying an IBM-PC compatible

neeraj@axon.siemens.com (Neeraj Bhatnagar) (11/28/90)

I am planning to buy an IBM-PC compatible and would like to correspond with
people who are also in a decision phase. I am listing some of my major concerns
to motivate the discussion. Also, I would prefer Email to postings on the net.

Major concerns:

1. Mainly for home use. C, C++, UNIX, Common LISP, word processing, 2-3 yr old
kids stuff.

2. RAM size (how many meg-bytes, minimum, maximum) for above applications.

3. I shall buy through mail order.

4. Are all clones almost equally good in quality. Hard to believe.

5. Is a loaded 286 with top clock speed, color monitor, accelerator cards
better than a base 386. Why or why not.

6. 110V/220V switchability.

7. Is it a better idea to buy the monitor from third party suppliers or package
deals are generally cheaper.

8. Does placing a bulk-order (if you are in NJ and we can place a joint order)
bring the price down?

9. How about buying an IBM computer? As against an IBM-clone?

and more.
