Hi! I am now the proud owner of a 1mb (720kb formatted) 3.5 drive. I just installed it in place of one of the two 5.25 drives in my 286. And it works! I'm happy! But, it will only format at 360k. It will read a disk that has 720k of space/data, but only format to 360k. I *suspect* it's cause of the controller, and that I ought to be happy that it even works at all without replacing same, but is that it, and are there things I should check before making a fool of myself at the computer store? :-) I don't know what controller it is, all I know is the board is int ehre with lots of little ribbon-wires coming out of it going to my hard drive, and the two floppies. :-) Should I start playing with dip-switches? I had the same problem when I added my 1.44Mb 3.5inch floppy. The problem turned out to be in my BIOS. I needed to get a more recent version from the manufacturer. I doubt the problem is the controller since it DOES read the floppy. It's more likely that the BIOS doesn't know how to tell the controller to do the higher density format. Ed ekalenda@cup.portal.com

Are you sure you read your DOS-manual ? Try out thiese topics: FORMAT, DRIVPARM (DOS 3.2), DRIVER.SYS (DOS 3.3+) The SETUP procedure (perhaps pressing some key like [ins] or [del] while booting your mashine, or by using the SETUP program, which is supplied with ``old-time'' AT-BIOS'es while they dont have build- in SETUP. Using one or more of thiese utilities, you should be able to tell the OS, what format you`r new floppydrive is! Dr. cand.DOS Kresten
