[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Virus in Sound Blaster software!

am42+@andrew.cmu.edu (Alexander Paul Morris) (11/29/90)

A warning to Sound Blaster and additional SB chip users:

I purchased the Sound Blaster card with CMS chips about one and a half
months ago from Carlisle Computers (they advertise in Computer Shopper).
Around that time I also got the Yankee Doodle virus that took me a month
to detect (I didn't have Vshield running since I never had a virus in
the previous 10 years of using PCs). It damaged many EXE files, and
created many operating problems, because it messes up your memory in
certain ways that impair system run-time operation. I could not track
down where our computers got the virus from. But today, I just brought
my card home from Carnegie Mellon (with all the disks), and a couple
other programs, and next thing I knew, my BBS's computer was being
infested with the Yankee Doodle virus again. This time I was determined
to find it source. I traced it down to the file CMSDRV.COM on the Sound
Blaster C/MS DRIVER for C/MS chips disk. Now, I'm not sure whether this
virus came from the dealer (Carlisle Comp) or directly from Creative
Labs, but that's irrelevent. What is important to note is all the
trouble this damned virus has caused me, and to make sure that this
doesn't happen to any of you. To be sure, run clean a: [Doodle]
(that's McAfee's Clean), try version >=67 That will remove any
occurances of the virus that pops up, and if it can't, at least it will
remove the file so it can't infect your machine. Hope this can save all
of you some (or a lot) of misery. If anyone has any comments or
questions, just reply! If you have any questions, you can reply to the
mail address above, or call up my BBS (DataCom SoftWare) in NYC at (212)
496-7946. It's a PCBoard communicating with a USR HST 14.4k and almost
550megs!
