[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Partitioning AFTER The Fact?????

6500boo@ucsbuxa.ucsb.edu (William Bushing) (12/01/90)

Netters,

I just received a new Gateway 2000 33 MHz 386 and it is great
EXCEPT for one thing. Using DOS 4.01 Gateway did not partition
my 200 Mb Maxtor hard disk (nor did I ask them to).

Can I use DOS 4.01 FDISK to create a second partition on the
drive without destroying all the files already on the disk?
At this point I have about 50 Mb of files already installed
and hate the idea of backing up the ones that aren't yet,
FDISK'ing the drive, reformatting both partitions and then
copying (or restoring) all the files again.

My understanding is that FDISK is destructive even if all
the files are located within the limit of the partition.
Is this true?

Thanks for any responses. By the way... for those interested
the Gateway seems to be a fine machine. My only "complaint"
is that the keyboard doesn't stack up to my AST 286's but
that is a subjective call.
