[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Looking for EGA/VGA board with NTSC timing

addison@pollux.usc.edu (Richard Addison) (12/02/90)

A number of years ago, I remember a board from ATI (I don't remember what
the initials stand for) called the EGA Wonder. It claimed to be compatible
with almost any monitor, including the CGA compatible ones. It used
interlaced video to get more than the 200 lines the original CGA allowed.
It also used something akin to pulse width modulation in an attempt to
get more than 16 colors on an CGA monitors. From a program's point of view,
however, it looked like a normal EGA board as long as the program didn't
try to bang directly on the registers in too many weird ways.

I don't know if this board is available any more. I've seen ads for a
board called the VGA Wonder, but I don't know if it has the same ability
to work with CGA monitors.

So I am asking for recommendations for any EGA or VGA boards now available
that would allow using EGA or VGA graphics and text modes on a CGA
compatible monitor. I'd also be interested in buying a used EGA Wonder
(or another board with similar capabilities) from someone.

For my situation, a board without the NTSC scanning rates does not suit me.

I'd prefer email responses so that I'm sure not to miss responses, but I
will be watching for posted responses as well.

Thank you,
Richard Addison
