[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Subst and MS Word

jm9t+@andrew.cmu.edu (Josh Brian Mastronarde) (12/13/90)

I have a problem. I just cleaned up my hard disk and am using subst to
shorten pathnames (i.e. I subst d: c:\language\tc\bin) etc. I have
about 8-10 subst's from drive z: down that I do. Everything seems to
work fine except Word 5.0. When I try to run that, it says "not enough
file handles. set files=20 in config.sys". I have 35 files (I've tried
it with 55. Same message) What is causing this? It worked fine before
I started using subst (or even when I had 1 or 2 drives subst'ed). Does
subst do something with the files? Or does Word, seeing that I have z
drives in the system, require a certain number of handles per drive?
This is a real problem, since I can't fit my whole path in 127
characters without Subst (please no flames about path length. I have 13
megs of compilers; all search for their own little files in the path;
batch files are useless for them, and they are NOT going into one big
directory).

Thanks in advance,

Okay, I fixed it. Too bad CMU decided Undergrads should not have access
to the 'cancel' feature. Anyway, my problem was that I had a CTTY NUL
and CTTY CON pair in the batch file that did the subst's. This was
because if subst thinks a drive has already been substituted, the
message comes through even with >nul on the line. So I got rid of those
and all's well.
I do remember reading somewhere that CTTY leaves a file open
somewhere. I guess Word has a problem with that. But I'm fine now; I
just rewrote the batch file so that it should never subst when it
shouldn't. If anyone knows why Word had such a problem, or if there is
a fix for CTTY, I'd still be interested. I heartily thank myself for
finding the problem so quickly. :-)
                    Thanks,
                   \\\ Josh ///

I don't think SUBST is your problem. I use SUBST extensively as well
to extend the path, and even have the Word 5.0 directory SUBST'd as a
logical drive. I've never had the problem you describe, across a lot
of DOS versions (currently 4.01). Currently I'm using FILES=50.
My guess is your problem is something else.
