[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Should I go SCSI? Which controller?

mvolo@uncecs.edu (Michael R. Volow) (12/16/90)

In my 386SX with AMI BIOS and 44 MB HD, I am considering replacing the
HD with a used 94 MB WREN III SCSI HD. The cost of the drive is very
reasonable, compared with the usual cost of this size drive. I plan to
sell the 44 MB and 1:1 WD MFM controller to help finance the switch.

I understand that low-end SCSI controllers (e.g., ST02) are slow; and
that high-end SCSI controllers are costly (e.g., Adaptec 1540B $250).
The cheapest price I could find in the Shopper for an Adaptec 1522
was $160.

I would appreciate recommendations for an SCSI controller (including
vendor and price if possible) for this drive, with the emphasis on
both economy and performance. This is a standalone machine with 4 MB
RAM running only MSDOS applications and some games.

What incompatibilities might I encounter running an SCSI HD? I hear
the SCSI takes some of the high ram that QEMM would ordinarily map.

Thanks in advance.
