I ran a system diagnostic program called ASTUTE few days ago, the following
are part of the reports I got:

When I chose to do

       -- the DMA Controller Test (Checks 8237 registers. Channel
          Requests and Output Addressability), the result is:

                      Replace system Board
                      01:08:07 -> DMA Controller failure
            [test failed with Errors = 1]

       --  Parallel Printer Port(s) test
           the result is:

                      Defective Printer Port at I/O Address 278
                      06:01:13 -> Printer Port 278 Failure

        -- Async Comm Port (s) test
           the result is:

                       Serial Port 2 is Defective
                       03:01:02 -> Defective Adaptor Logic

I couldn't do all subsystem tests, because my computer was halted
very often during the test. I don't know if this related to the
bad DMA Controller chip? I have some questions and hope to
get help through the net.

Q1: How much I can trust these diagnostic programs?
    Are there some more reliable testing programs?

Q2: There are five square chips on the mother board, which have brand names and
    two numbers on each one, but I don't know which is DMA controller chip?
    These brands and numbers are respectively:

               Suntac                     Suntac
               ST62bc004-B1               ST62BC002-B
               8821K6                     8819E6

               Suntac                     Suntac
               ST62BC001-B                ST62C005-B
               8820K6                     817103

               Suntac
               ST62BC003-B
               8820K6

 Thanks!

NOTE: the machine is an AT clone (12 Mhz 286, no math co-processor, 1 Mb RAM).
The modem is at COM2 and there is a serial port at COM1. With both boards
removed the errors still occurred, although when the modem was removed they
took a slightly different form. Also note that there is no parallel port
on the machine, which makes me suspect that the DMA controller problem is
causing all the others by just confusing the test program.

Can anybody shed some light on this? The machine runs but freezes very
often. Is it possible to buy just the offending chip?

Any help/info is welcome. I'll summarize.
