[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] 286 -> 486 ; WHAT DOES IT TAKE??

miket@voder.nsc.com (Mike Tuason) (12/14/90)

I have a 286-12Mhz system that isn't quite fast enough anymore.

Can I just yank out the motherboard and plop in a 486 (or 386)??
Are they the same footprint??

Also, can I still use my EGA card/monitor setup (I just need processing
speed, not graphics)??

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Probably.

Maybe, do you have a "baby" AT board, some were made to fit into XT cases,
then some genius figured he could save $0.05 per case by making a "baby"
AT case; full sized AT boards won't fit into a "baby" AT cases.

Yup.

Yes, you can just drop that 486 board in, and all your old cards will work.
The same goes for the 386 and 386SX.
