[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] seeking info on LANS in microlabs

fyfe@bgsuvax.UUCP (Bob Fyfe) (12/18/90)

I made my inquiry to comp.sys.mac and comp.sys.ibm.pc regarding different
sites setup of LANS in microlabs. I was then duly informed that it would be
better to send it to the *.misc groups so my apologies if you've read this
posting before.

........

I'm trying to gather some information about LAN's that would be used in a
university microcomputer lab setting. Ideally, we would like to connect both
Macintoshes and IBM PC's to the LAN. I am interested in peoples past and/or
current experiences of LAN's in a micro lab. I know that wanting to
connect both IBM's and Apple's to the same LAN automatically eliminates
some LAN's. What I'm interested in is your experiences in administering the
LAN's that you already have (even if they don't contain both types of
machines).

Some questions:

1) What steps have you taken to protect against viruses?
2) How do you handle multiple use of one software package? I.E. do you
put multiple copies on the server or use something like Launch Break
to launch multiple sessions? What software is maybe already set up to
handle being put on a server and having multiple launches?
3) Along with #2, how do you control multiple copies of the software?
Does the net software provide any solutions to these type of problems?
4) Does your net software have provision for multiple types of printers
such as a laser printer and a dot-matrix printer?
5) How do you protect the software from being copied or trashed?
6) Is the LAN set up so that users can retrieve files off the server
and store files on the server? For instance, it would be nice for a
faculty member to somehow be able to have his students put projects
on the server in such a way that only he could read them - almost like
as if they had mailed them to the instructor.
7) How well does your LAN handle lots of traffic like at peak lab times?

I'd appreciate if you could mail responses directly back to me since I
don't normally read these groups.
