[net.followup] What is Vegemite anyway????

martin (02/14/83)

Vegamite???, i'm english (and proud of it!!), we call it Marmite. in
fact not only Athletes swear by it, but mothers also. Babies are brought
up as 'Marmite Babies', given Marmite Soldiers from the age of 2 upwards
(maybe even earlier). In fact it was avaliable free from the 'baby clinics'
as part of the National Health.

Marmite contains:-

	Yeast extracts, Vegatable extracts.
	B groups vitamins.
	Riboflavin + Niacin.

It's made by 'Marmite Ltd', Burton-on-trent, England. And i'm sure it
was make well before Vegamite was introduced in Aussie Land. The two products
are the same.
Shoprite stores in NJ area carry it as stock, but it's very expensive. I have
the largest size jar collected from england whenever a friend comes or goes
to england.

On the note of taste, i have tried it out on a few americans, and they ALL
hate the salty taste or the FOUL smell. some have got use to it, but only
after trying a lot. great i say, more for me.

JJust to add to Martin's praise of Marmite*, the yeast extract comes from
the Guinness brewery. The brewing process produces an excess of yeast,
which Guinness sell to Marmite.

"Guinness is good for you", as the comercials say.

* Martin pointed out that what Aussie's know as Vegemite, the British know
(and love) as Marmite.

No, Marmite is no substitute for Vegemite. They are both smelly and black, but
the taste is quite different. As Martin Levy noted, Marmite contains vegetable
extract as well as yeast extract. Moreover, it is my recollection that it also
contains beef extract (or used to?).

PS: Get the spelling right: VegEmite.

'Vegemite' sounds very much like a similar product marketed in
Britain known as 'Marmite'. My parents used to try and force
me to eat the stuff. My parents still suffer from the delusion
that the stuff actually *tastes good*. You can find the stuff
  in most North American supermarkets.

			Not afraid to shun *mite.

I agree with martin levy. Marmite is the real
stuff not the Aussie Vegemite. Having been brought
up as a kid on Marmite, I recommend Marmite and
butter sandwiches.

In England there is a product called "Marmite" which is
a brewer's yeast extract as is Vegamite. Personally, I can think of
things I'd much rather do with brewers yeast than eat it.

I'll be drinking your health tonight with a glass of home brew,
