[net.ham-radio] Current Measurement, Solar Power

john@anasazi.UUCP (John Moore) (08/18/85)

I am working on a project for a solar powered radio site. We need
(for obvious reasons) to be able to measure battery charging currents. The
solar system is charging a 12 Volt battery. A TTL uC (68705R3) will be
used for telemetry, and it has an 8 bit ADC with 0-5V input range. The
question is: How can I measure the charging currents (0-200 Amps) to 5%
accuracy without incurring significant voltage drop, and using the
ADC described above? Does anyone know of current transducers which are
commercially available? (We would rather buy than build unless the solution
is pretty simple - the site is accessible only by helicopter and is not
a great place for experimenting.)
