Some time ago I requested information about software that would allow printing to a DOS based printer from a "networked" UNIX host. Thanks to several informative responses, I learned of two such products: NCSA LPD is a public domain package, currently in beta release, from the developers of NCSA Telnet. I had to get a newer, "alpha" version to support a PostScript printer; that version is probably part of the beta release by now. The current beta release can be obtained by anonymous ftp from tacky.cs.olemiss.edu, in the pub/lpd directory. PC/LPD is from FTP Software, the developers of PC/TCP. At present it supports the lpq and lprm commands in addition to lpr, although NCSA is working on these. PC/LPD appears to support a greater number of ethernet network interface cards than the NCSA package. Single copies list for $750. Address: 26 Princess Street, Wakefield, MA 01880-3004. Phone: 617/246-0900. Fax: 617/246-0901. Both packages support multiple printers attached to a single PC. Hardware (Ethernet) connectivity to the Unix client is required. Internet Protocol (IP) software sufficient for the lpr server function is included with each package. -- Rick Troxel | All effort and exertion put forth by man from the fullness rick@helix.nih.gov| of his heart is worship, if it is prompted by the highest 301/496-4823 | motives and the will to do service to humanity.
