[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Obtaining the last access dates of files stored in a MS-DOS environment

efam@nvuxr (elliott familant) (12/27/90)

In the UNIX operating environment, you can obtain the date that a file
was last accessed. Virtually, any operation done on a file changes this
date, including reading, copying, moving, and of course modifying. I
know of no such similar information in the MS-DOS environment. I know
you can get the last date that a file was modified, but I would like the
last access date. Is this information obtainable?

Thanks in advance.

No; the only time and date DOS associates with a file is the time and
date of last modification. Some networks, though, do store additional
information; Novell NetWare, for instance, maintains time and date information
for file creation, last modification, and last access (though the latter
will be meaningless most of the time if you back up your network regularly).
