[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] PC Modem pooling with PCSA

osyjm@caesar.cs.montana.edu (Jaye Mathisen) (12/28/90)

Does anybody have any software that maps a COM port to a LAT port, or uses
some feature of PCSA? I have a bunch of PC's , VAXStations, DECservers, and
I want to allow the PC's to access the modems on the Decserver's. I realize
that I could use SETHOST on the PC, but I want the user to be able to run
the comm software of his/her choice.

Running an RS232 line from every PC to a DECServer, and then using some
of the AUTOCONNECT stuff is out of the question... For al that work I
might as well put a modem in every PC...

Are there any other solutions I'm overlooking? Please e-mail and I"ll
summarize responses and post if demand warrants.

Jaye,

If you run DECnet or LAT from your PC you can use the current PC KERMIT
V3.0 which will use either DECnet, LAT, Novel, 3COM or a variety of
other network protocols to connect across.

(Just do a MS-KERMIT> SET PORT DECNET nodename and it will try to connect
first of LAT if available or fallback to DECnet)

The V3.0 PC KERMIT includes VT320 and TEK 4010 emulation, DECmultinational
charactersets and more. It also supports sliding windows, and larger
(1000) packet sizes.

Copies are available from

Columbia University
612 West 115th Street
New York, NY 10025

(I believe they are $10-20 for a cruchie or floppy)

Or you can order "USING MS-DOS KERMIT TO GO ONLINE TO THE WORLD"
from Digital Press there is a Floppy enclosed with the latest KERMIT.
It is a really good referance for using MS-DOS KERMIT...
(Sorry don't have the order number, the folks at 1-800-343-4040 will)

Be seeing you,
