I'm looking, as if somebody hasn't alrready, for a decent backgground downloading package that supports kermit with extended packet lengths (1000K). I know that all of these neat Multitasking OS's (Win 3 & DV) could and do work, but the throughput is lousy. So, anybody find anything good - PD or noPD. Of course I would also enjoy X/Y/Z modem support, but Kermit is a must and most of the progs that I've seen do not have a decent Kermit. ..Mike Figueroa.......................... _______________________ . 6600phnx@ucsbuxa.ucsb.edu (Internet) . / // / . @ucsbuxa.bitnet (Bitnet) . /---- // / __ ......................................... / // / / "Vila weighs 73 kilos . . ." / ------ ------

What's wrong with MS Kermit? It's free, it's from my favorite university, and it runs fine under Desqview. NM

If you want ONLY kermit, go with the original (MS-kermit3.01); tune DV to give kermit more quanta while it is background down-loading and fewer quanta to you working in the forground as well as fewer quanta to other bg tasks. Kermit's bandwidth for binary compressed files is not as good as zmodem or uupc. Kermit's bandwidth (using large packets) for text is ok. wnqvt451.zip is a shareware terminal emulator with zmodem and extended packet kermit. It is available on simtel20 and the simtel20 mirrors sites. Running this package on someone else's PC, I found the background zmodem downloading to be acceptably fast. wnqvt is aggressive about grabbing quanta from windows. * * * I have not yet purchased windows for my PC; can anyone recommend a good source (price, future updates?) I will not run pirated software on my PC! Windows is relatively inexpensive, though desqview seems better for my purposes. Suggestions?

It supports background downloading, Kermit, X and Y-modem protocols, and a couple of others. It is a CrossTalk clone, and I have been reasonably pleased with it for logging on to BBSs. I have not actually used the Kermit portion of the package, so I can't comment on the quality of the Kermit support. The version I received was specifically set up for the modem it came with, with MNP5 support, etc. Dave Halliwell My employer wouldn't speak for me LAST year; why would this year be any different????
