[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] MS-DOS version 5?

mrh@camcon.co.uk (Mark Hughes) (01/07/91)

Does it exist yet? If not, does anyone have any idea when it might
be released. I seem to recall rumours of a release around the end of 1990.

If it does exist, does anyone know anything about its features. Where
can I get it?

According to PC Week the final beta update was shipped last week and
general availability will be in March or April...

It exists, and the BETAversion is out since Oct. or Nov 90.
Two nice features : 1. It loads most of its kernel into the memory
between the adapters (you've got about 600-
			620 K free memory)
		    2. Help : every commands now has a included help
			text.
There are some other features (e.g. DosShell with some(!) multitasking)
, but you'll see !!

  I know DR-DOS 5.0 is out. I've heard pretty good reviews over it;
Recent issue (one before "current") had an article over it.

Look for it in MARCH or April. I heard (on the net) that MS is wary of
another DOS 4.0/4.01. 4.0 had enough bugs that by the time 4.01 came out,
people had decided they could get along on 3.3. So MS is testing 5.0 very
carefully. Anyway, that's the story I heard.
