[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Summary: Macintosh to IBM disk readers

garrison@zodiac.rutgers.edu (01/10/91)

Thanks for the all the exciting messages (26 of them + several news
postings) I got in response to my IBM to Mac disk translator programs.
Since I also recieved 4 requests for me to forward my answers to other
people, I figured I'd post a summary of the programs that allow Macs to
read IBM and vice-versa.

IBM 3.5" disk reader programs for the Macintosh:

Apple File Exchange - 98% of the messages I got mentioned this program.
It comes bundled with all new Macs and works fine
(and it's free!) as long as you have a SuperDrive.

DOS Mounter - from Dayna Design. Let's Mac mount PC disk's directly to the
desktop. Works great - IBM disks look just like Macs with
directories turned into folders and such... (Better yet,
a working demo version of the program is available from
              vega.hut.fi (FREE!!)).

PC Access - available from most mail order houses. Sounds similar to
DOS Mounter (but, alas, you'll have to pay for it). (Does
            some translating (see MacLink).

MacLink Plus - translators for Apple File Exchange that lets you translate
tons of stuff from DOS to its Mac equivalent. (ie WordStar
to MSWord, Lotus to Excel etc)

DataViz's set of translation software (~ $135) - translates loads of stuff.

Mac 3.5" disk reader for the IBM PC:

COPY-II-CARD from Central Point - driver/controller package (~$120). Expensive
but nice (according to those responding).
(Does alot more than just read Mac disks).

Other ideas included connecting them through a null modem and using Kermit.

And thank you for your support.
                                Karl

I have been using a dyna file for the last year or so. It plugs
into the SCSI drive and makes IBM disks appear on the Mac desktop.
works just fine...
