Fortunately, this is no longer true.  HP recently introduced a new ink
that almost totally eliminates the water solubility problem.  From
what I understand, it's not totally resistant to water immediately
after printing, but dries quickly and has little or no smearing
problem.  Contact your local HP dealer for the official word...

I have an HP Deskjet 500 (purchased in December for $500).  Laser quality
output, now has ink that doesn't wash off (that was the original big
drawback).  I use Quattro Pro 2.0 with it, works BEAUTIFULLY!  At three pages
per minute in draft mode, it even is an acceptable regular printer.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
