[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Hard drive manufacturers // Everex software

moyer@brahms.udel.edu (Eric Moyer) (01/29/91)

We are looking to purchase a ~600M hard drive to store an image data base
on. Its possible that we may want to switch the drive between PCs in case
one of the systems goes down.

         (1) Between Micropolis, Maxtor, and Seagate(Imprimis), which
company stands the better chance of staying in business long
             enough to give us support?

         (2) Any advice about making it easier to move the drive between
systems? Do most manufacturers make external versions w/case
             and power sup.?

Also, has anyone had any experience with Everex tape backups for the PC?
We're looking at a 150 meg tape sys, but the big question is the software.
Since our drive is so much larger than the tape, we really need a software
package which will be flexible about partial backups, retrieving subsets
of image backups, and managing incremental backups.
We have a bit of a unique situation with the backups, since all the files
will be exactly the same size (all are image files), and we will very
rarely, if ever, want to remove a file from the database. It would be
nice to have some kind of incremental backup capability in light of this.
Ideally, we would like to have the full data base on tape, and only ADD the
new files to the existing tape when they are created (with OCCASIONAL full
disk backups to make sure that the tapes are all up to date).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million.
