[comp.sys.ibm.pc.misc] Where are cheap memory chips?

F0O@psuvm.psu.edu (01/30/91)

I'm looking to buy a computer soon, and am looking for some fairly
cheap memory chips. Here is a partial list of what the Swan catalog has:

    256K 80ns SIMM $49
     1MB 80ns SIMM $139

Is this about par as far as price goes? Or are there other mail order
houses with much cheaper prices?

                                                      Thanks in advance!

                                                               [Tim]

I can't speak for the 1MB SIMM, but I just bought 80ns 256K SIMMs from
Elek-Tek for $24/each. Elek-Tek is in a several suburbs of Chicago
(Willowbrook), but I do not know if there are any near you...

Keep shopping...

Prices for 256Kx9 SIMM should be about $20.00
Prices for 1MBx9 SIMM should be about $45.00
These are prices for 80ns parts. I've seen the 1MBx9 for as little as
$39.00 recently.

Check PCWeek, MacWeek, Computer Shopper, etc. You'll find some.
Happy shopping and don't pay overly high prices for RAM. RAM is cheap.

At the recent computer "show" around here, 1MB simm/sips were being
sold as 80ns - $48, 70ns - $52. Don't pay more!

The price is higher for the new 72-pin 1Mg/4Mg SIMM packaging that
Dell uses for it's 325D/333D 386 machines and above. From Dell, 1Mgx9
SIMM is $99. 4Mg is $595. Part of the price is not only the packaging
but tighter specs. These parts call out a Total Row Access time (TRAC)
of 80ns and a Total Column Access time (TCAC) of 20ns. This latter
spec is the deciding factor.

Most SIMMs are priced on the TRAC number. The TCAC can vary from
40ns to almost 80ns depending on the manufacturer. The higher the
TCAC the lower the price in most cases.

BTW, Kingston makes the 72pin SIMM modules for the Dell machines. I
purchased 2Mg at $99 a piece. The 4mg went for $407. Both from this
local vendor:
